Finding Your Perfect Colour & Style of Tie

Your tie is one of those finishing touches to your overall look that can help you stand out from the crowd. However, because there are so many different options to choose from out there, it can be hard to figure out what’s right for you. In the following post, therefore, we are going to offer some help, focusing on how you choose the right colour and style of tie.

First thing first, you need to understand the basics.

Basics of Choosing Ties
The first thing you need to think of before you move on things like colours and knots is the width and the length of the tie. You need to pick one that matches your body shape and build and the style of clothing you are wearing. Depending on your size, if you have an average physique, you should not be looking for a tie that is wider than between 2.5” and 3.5” inches and it should be long enough to just reach your belt buckle.
It’s not just your body shape that you need to consider though, but also the size of the lapels on your blazer or suit jacket. Make sure the tie is similarly wide.

Patterns and Colours
Next up, you need to think about the colours and whether you are going to have patterns or not. Are you looking for a very sophisticated and classy look, then you should consider either a lightly patterned or semi-solid tie, especially if you are wearing a solid-coloured suit? However, if you want to stand out, you should consider contrasting your shirt with a tie that is boldly coloured.

The main thing you need to remember when wearing ties with patterns is that those patterns do not clash with the patterns on the rest of your clothes.

Knot Styles of Ties
Another thing you need to think about when choosing a necktie is the type of collar the shirt you are going to be wearing has, particularly when it comes to deciding on the all-important tie knot you are going to use. For example, shirts with widespread collars are best matched with a tie with a full or half Windsor knot, whereas point collared shirts work best with Four hand knots.

You need to remember that if you opt for a bigger tie knot, you need more tie to pull it off properly, whereas smaller tie knots do not require quite as much length. For formal events like weddings and business meetings you should choose a full or half Windsor knot, whereas if you are going to a more informal event like a cocktail party or the bar with your friends, a four in hand knot will be perfectly fine.

While it may seem like a lot of effort to put that much thought into the type of tie you choose and the colour, you will be glad you did when you don’t feel out of place
