A popular theory is that the name tweed is a twist on the Scottish word for “tweel” or twill. This is because it is the signature weave of the fabric. It is said that in 1826, a London clerk accidentally transcribed an order to “tweel” and wrote “tweed” instead. Therefore, the name came into use.
Tweed is woollen twill cloth often woven in herringbone, checked, or speckled design. However, houndstooth and of course Tartan patterns are the most popular.
Originating in rural Scotland, it is still produced there to this day. The name reflects its original location and its weave, hence being connected to the River Tweed. As well as a misreading of tweel, the Scottish form of twill.
The wonderful thing about tweed is it is never just ONE colour. Due to this our skinny mens tweed ties can be paired with many elements from your wardrobe. One style tip is that you create contrast with the other fabrics in your outfit. For example, to pair a textured mens tweed tie with a fine/refined tweed fabric jacket.
